Metrix Instrument Company today presented its industry-leading SETPOINT™ Condition Monitoring Software at the 2014 OSIsoft Users Conference in San Francisco. As an OSIsoft partner, Metrix participated in the conference both as a presenter and with a booth in its technology fair. The conference, attended by 1300 customers, showcased new technologies based on OSIsoft’s PI System™ as well as customer case histories demonstrating how they use the PI System to address their needs for real-time and historical data across their organizations.
The presentation was delivered by Randall Chitwood, SETPOINT VP, and Steve Sabin, SETPOINT Product Manager. It showed how the PI System is being used as the infrastructure for collection and visualization of machinery condition monitoring data, including high-speed vibration waveforms and specialized data presentation formats such as shaft orbits, vibration spectra, bode / polar plots, and others. Historically, the vibration data collection rates necessary to allow detailed machinery diagnostics were too fast to entertain use of the plant's data archive (typically a PI System), particularly when a system was going to encompass dozens or hundreds of vibration channels. As a result, stand-alone vibration monitoring software infrastructures with their own proprietary databases, servers, display clients, security models, and network connections evolved out of necessity to handle the data collection speeds required. However, as the capabilities of the PI System have improved, now surpassing one million tags per second, the ability to treat vibration waveforms as simply another type of time series data in the PI System database has become practical.
When asked about industry’s acceptance of this approach, Chitwood was very enthusiastic: “The reception to this system has been nothing short of phenomenal. We are delivering a message that is very compelling – extend the PI System you already own to do full-featured condition monitoring. This is the type of data customers have been told historically was impossible to stream into and out of a PI Server due to its bandwidth. We have shown that it isn’t just possible, it is practical, it delivers immediate value, and it is working at more than a dozen sites already.” Chitwood concluded, “Every other supplier is telling customers to put in more infrastructure to host their condition monitoring system – we’re showing customers how to take infrastructure out.”
Metrix Instrument Company (www.metrixvibration.com) is a leading supplier of machinery protection and condition monitoring products and services to industrial customers worldwide. Founded in 1965, Metrix was the first company to offer vibration transmitters, allowing vibration to be more easily integrated with existing plant control and monitoring systems accepting process measurement inputs via industry-standard 4-20mA signals. It built on this rich heritage by introducing its industry-leading SETPOINT product line (www.metrixsetpoint.com) in 2010 to further address critical machinery protection and condition monitoring applications. The company does business in more than 50 countries worldwide and, in addition to its products, offers associated field services for machinery diagnostics, system installation and maintenance, and training. A Roper Industries business, Metrix is headquartered in Houston, Texas. Factory-direct sales and service offices are maintained in more than a dozen locations worldwide and augmented by a global network of qualified sales and service partners.
